Rebus poems are wonderful for very young learners, as the visual clues inserted in the text provide excellent support for them so that they can "read" the story along with you.
They will love being able to say the rhyming words when you point to the picture. "Every bird loves a tree. Every flower loves a bee. Every lock loves a key. And I love you!" The range of vocabulary is quite large, but each section of the rebus poem is clearly illustrated on the opposite page and, because of the simple rhyming couplets, will probably be easily picked up by the youngest children. To support the vocabulary acquisition you could make a set of pictures illustrating the objects which appear in the poem and play their games... a bird and a tree, a lock and key, etc...
