The illustrations in this book are wonderful. A little girl, Handa, wants to take a surprise gift of fruit to her friend Akeyo in the next village. She puts seven delicious fruits into a basket, and carries them on her head as she walks to a Akeyo's village. "I wonder which fruit she will like best? Will she like the soft yellow banana or the sweet smelling guava? Will she like the round juicy orange or the ripe red mango? Will she like the spikey leaved pineapple? The creamy red avocado or the tangy purple passion fruit?"
On her walk, unnoticed by Handa, and unmentioned in the story script seven African animals take Handa's fruit. The secret shared between the author and the children is magical! But all ends well, as an accident fills her basket with tangerines. A session on tasting fruit, especially the fruit mentioned in this story, would be a good follow-up activity to this story.
