This is a really enjoyable little story about six-year-old Ben going into a hospital with a bad ear, and having an operation. He first sees a doctor who says he needs an operation and then we are taken through the experience ben has in the hospital and operation until he goes home.
His family are prominent throughout the story and in the illustrations. Each double-page spread is a must in the classroom for discussions which start with 'What can you see?' as they are clearly and humorously illustrated. There are lots of children illustrated in various stages of illness or recovery and it will give the class a great deal to talk about. A story could be created for each child in the ward and about their illness or accident that took them in hospital. This story is particularly suitable for the younger end of this age group as the character, ben, is six years old.
